About

A Church where Everybody is Somebody, and Jesus Christ is Lord!

Westside Baptist Temple is a family-friendly, multi-ethnic, independent Baptist church where you’ll feel welcomed and loved! We’re not perfect, just a group of forgiven sinners striving to know Christ and make Him known to a lost world!

We are committed to helping everyone come to know Christ on a genuine personal level.

We want you to know Jesus as your personal Savior and for you to be part of a church family that cares for you, that helps you to grow in the grace and knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ.

At Westside Baptist Temple the Preaching of God’s Word is emphasized. A modern trend in preaching is to soften the truth of how God wants us to live. This results with truth being weakened to the point of being just another religious option. At Westside, the preaching is an unapologetic declaration of timeless principles from the Bible, with practical applications for your life.

Distinctive music is another special aspect of Westside. After just one service you will realize that our intent is to Glorify God to the best of our ability. Our Traditional, yet exciting, congregational singing and special music gives everyone the opportunity to participate in expressing God’s worth to Him.

Finally, we hold to Traditional, Biblical, Baptist Beliefs. In the past, when people stood up for what they believed, they were said to have character. Today, some call them intolerant, old-fashioned, or out-of-touch. In our drifting society, where families are falling apart and violence and disharmony are common, people need solid, steady teaching from God's word.

We believe that the time-tested truths of the Bible, preached with relevance and compassion, offer an anchor of peace and steadfastness that people need today.

Our Purpose

Matthew 28:19-20 is the great commission given to the Church by Jesus and gives us our purpose:

“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. “

1) We’re here to Share the Gospel with the lost.

2) We’re here to Teach Believers to follow God's word.

3) We’re here to Train Believers to minister to others.

Our History

Westside Baptist Temple was started in June of 1978 by Dr. Carl E Chitwood, his wife Marilyn and his 3 children. Pastor Chitwood knew that people needed the gospel and needed a place to grow and learn the Bible. Due to the faithful dedicated service of the Chitwood Family and especially Pastor and Mrs. Chitwood, Westside has become a vibrant independent fundamental Baptist church on El Paso's westside.

Pastor Chitwood graduated to heaven in June of 2023 and we are certain he heard those wonderful words from his Lord Jesus Christ - "Well done thou good and faithful servant."

Our Beliefs

  • We believe the whole Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, is the verbally inspired Word of God and divinely preserved in the English language and commonly known as the authorized, King James Version of 1611 A.D. (II Timothy 3:16)
  • We believe Jesus Christ was born of Mary the virgin, and is the very Son of God. (Matthew 1:23)
  • We believe that Christ died for our sins. (I Corinthians 15:3)
  • We believe that He arose from the grave the third day. (I Corinthians 15:4)
  • We believe that He alone is the mediator and intercessor between God and man. (I Timothy 2:5; Hebrews 7:25)
  • We believe that in order to be “saved” the soul must be born again. (John 3:3)
  • We believe that every born again soul should declare his/her faith through baptism by immersion in water. (Romans 6:4-5)
  • We believe that Christ keeps those who are born again eternally secure. (II Timothy 1:12; John 10:28)
  • We believe that Christians are called to separation from worldly, sinful practices, unto a life of usefulness for Christ. (II Corinthians 6:17)
  • We believe a church is a body of baptized believers whose mission is to preach and teach the gospel of salvation. (Matthew 28:18-20)
  • We believe it is the church’s responsibility to send the gospel around the world by supporting missionaries to place we can’t go (Acts 1:8)
